As my songs began to gain popularity in Nashville and I got to meet and play with some of my favorite artists, I had to be sure and remember a promise I made to myself back when I first started writing songs two years ago.

A lot of people are surprised to find out I've only been writing songs for a couple of years, and there's a reason for that. In the spring of 2001, I was diagnosed with an under-producing thyroid gland, or hypothyroidism. More than 13 million Americans have thyroid disorders and more than half of them aren't aware of it. Hypothyroidism can cause heart damage in the long term, but a common cause of death from hypothyroidism is suicide.

Up until this diagnosis, I spent years fighting clinical depression. When I finally started on a once-a-day synthetic hormone pill, which I'll gladly take every morning for the rest of my life, the depression and all the other symptoms associated with hypothyroidism went away. A few days after starting on this medication, I began to write these songs.

I promised myself that to whatever extent my songs brought me publicity, I would use that publicity to help other people who might have this problem.

So now, as Paul Harvey would say, you know the rest of the story. If you're taking anti-depressants, ask your doctor for a simple blood test to check your thyroid level. For more information, you can visit http://www.thyroid.org/.

My trip to Nashville is a celebration of getting my life back after so much misery. Every day on this earth is a gift from God. Have you opened your gift today?
